Question
After isolating the alkyl chlorides and alkyl bromides you are instructed to take the refractive index as quickly as possible. Refer to the boiling points of the 2-chloro-2-methylpropane(b.p 51-52) and 2-bromo-2-methylpropane(b.p 72-74), which alkyl halide is more volatile.
Considering your answer in the previous question, if you left either of your products exposed uncovered to the atmosphere while waiting to use the refractometer, would the refractive index increase, decrease or stay the same? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
Temperature is very important for the refractive index measurement. Therefore, the temperature of the prism and the temperature of the sample have to be controlled with high precision. The temperature control accuracy of these devices should be designed so that the variation in sample temperature is small enough that it will not cause a detectable refractive-index change. During the measurement if the solvent evaporets then it would take yhe lean temperature from the prism and become cooled down and gives wrong result. if you either of your products exposed uncovered to the atmosphere while waiting to use the refractometer, would the refractive index will be changed.
