Question

76 Exercise 9: Mitosis Materials Prepared slides onion root tip, whitefish blastula Microscope PROCEDURE A. Onion Root Tip Mitosis Obtain a prepared slide of an onion (Aulium) root tip. Focus on the slide sothat you are an area just above the tip. Do not focus on the very tip because these are protective root cap cells and are not undergoing mitosis. Switch to the 40x objective and observe individual cells. Refer to the description of each phase in the INTRODUCTION section to help you locate and identify each phase. 1. Locate a cell in interphasc, Sketch this cell and label the nuclear envelope, nucleolus, and cell wall. Do you see any visible indication that this cell is preparing to divide? If so, what indication? 2. Locate a cell in prophasc. Can you distinguish the chromosomes? Is a distinct nuclear envelope obvious sketch this prophase cell, indicate the direction of the spindle fibers, and label the chromosomes, centromeres, and poles.

Explanation / Answer

All of these questions are related to lab/practical work. I have attempted to answer the questions that are possible:

The interphase of mitosis will show the cells in such a way that their individual chromosomes will not be visible. The visible indication that the cell is about to enter into mitotic division is that the cell sizeis increased due to increased proteins.

Prophase: The Chromosomes are highly visible as separate bundles andnuclear envelope is not very distinct.

The rest of the calculation is very stariaghtforward and depends on the number of cells that you observe in each phase.
