Question
1. When 100ml of a solution of an acid, HA and 100ml of thesolution of a base, BOH, are mixed in a calorimeter, thetemperature increases from 21.7 o C to35.8o C. The heat capacity of the calorimeter is 10.5 J/Co .
How many calories of heat were envolved in the chemical reaction?
a. Did the solution absorb or give up heat energy?
b. Was the reaction between the acid and base endothermic orexothermic?
c. How many calories of heat were evolved in the chemicalreaction?
Thanks, will rate life saver.
Explanation / Answer
1. total vol of solution= 100+100 = 200 mll
heat required to raise temp = specific heat x temp change x mass of sol + specific heat of cal x etmp change
= 4.184 x ( 35.8-21.7) x 200 + ( 10.5 x ( 35.8-21.7) = 11947 J
(a) solution absorbed heat
(b) reaction is exothermic
(c) heat in joules = 11947 J , heat in cal = 11947 x 0.239 = 2855.3 Caories
