3. You work at a park that has a famous carousel. The park manager tells you that he wants to have flowers growing in planters on the carousel itself. You put the flowers on the carousel, and initially everyone is impressed. The flowers start growing out from the edge of the carousel, but once you turn on the lights on the carousel, they start growing inwards. Adding more lights outside the carousel does not change the direction of floral growth. You notice that when the carousel is running for 16 hours a day, the flowers grow more towards the center of the carousel However, eventually the plants begin to die. When you pull the plants out of the pots, you find that all of the roots have grown to the outside of the pots. What types of responses are involved in this response? Hint: remember that if you place a ball in the center of a carousel, it will migrate to the outside of the carousel and then off the carousel as it is spinningExplanation / Answer
As soon as the flowers are placed on the carousel as instructed by the park manager, the flowers started growing out from the edge of carousel which indicates lateral growth response initially. But when the lights are turned on they started growing inwards which indicates phototropism. It is the response of flowers growth in the direction of light. The inward growth of plants is due to the production of chlorophyll through photosynthesis process under the influence of light. Adding more lights outside the carousel didnot change the direction of floral growth indiactes they exhibited negative phototropism at this point. Eventually, after the plants death, the finding of roots growing outside the pots indicate positive geotropism. Roots exhibit positive geotropism, they grow down in response to gravity.
Therefore the lateral growth, photoptropism, negative phototropism and positive geotropism are the responses involved in the above scenario.
