Question

PLEASE ANSWER CLEARLY WITH UNITS

A 15 cm diameter petri dish is partially filled with water. You then add a drop of oil of volume 0.3 L which spreads out to form a uniform thin layer. You note that after this first drop is added the 600 nm light normally incident on the surface has no reflection. You then continuing adding 0.3 L drops one at a time and noting the intensity of the reflected light. When you have added 11 drops the intensity has reached the next minimum. Determine the index of refraction of the oil.

Explanation / Answer

volume of oil

V = 11x0.3 x 10^-9 m^3

A = 176.7 x 10^-4 m^2

thickness of oil

t = 186.74 nm

we know that

2tn = m x ( wavelength )

m = 2

n =600nm/t

n = 3.21299
