Question

So I'm having some issues with reaction rates and with this question:

CH3 --- Cl + I- ----> CH3 --- I + Cl-

Suppose we start the reaction with an initial iodomethane concentration of 0.260 M. This concentration increases to 0.840 M over a period of 1 h 20 min. What is the rate of reaction?

The answer in my text book says that the rate of formation is CH3I = 57.3 x 10(-3) M CH3I/min

When I do this problem, I get 0.00725 M, not that answer. What is going on?

Oh and one more problem. How could you increase the rate of a gaseous reaction without adding more reactants or a catalyst and without changing the temperature?

Explanation / Answer

1)rate of the reaction = dx/dt = 0.84- 0.26/80 = 0.00725 M/min

2) by changing the volume of the container that is decreasin the vol . of the container rate of the reaction increases
