Question

So I performed a GC experiment on Monday and I collected the data that I needed to do my calculations, however, the equation that my professor gave us is complicating things, I can't seem to figure out what he wants us to put as the dilution factor ? (See pics below). If I could get some assistance with this, it would be VERY much appreciated! Thanks in advance! The areas that I highlighted are the information that I think might help you guys have a better understanding of what I should

do.

Explanation / Answer

You have taken 50 mg of Thymol.

Step no. 5:

Here 50 mg Thymol is dissolved into 100 mL of methanol. The concentration of the solution (T) is 50 mg/ 100 mL = 0.5 mg/ mL

Step no. 6:

10 mL of the above solution is diluted to 25 mL

The concentration of the diluted solution (T 10) = (10 mL * 0.5 mg/ mL)/ 25 mL = 0.2 mg/ ml

Step no. 7:

5 mL of the above solution is diluted to 25 mL

The concentration of the diluted solution (T 5) = (5 mL * 0.2 mg/ mL)/ 25 mL = 0.04 mg/ ml

Step no. 8:

2 mL of the above solution is diluted to 25 mL

The concentration of the diluted solution (T 2) = (2 mL * 0.04 mg/ mL)/ 25 mL = 0.0032 mg/ ml

Step 9:

1 mL of the above solution is diluted to 25 mL

The concentration of the diluted solution (T 1) = (2 mL * 0.04 mg/ mL)/ 25 mL = 0.0032 mg/ ml
