Describe the effect on pH (increase, decrease or no change) that results from each of the following additions
A) potassium hypochlorite, KClO, to an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid, HClO
B) hydrochloric acid, HCl, to an aqueous solution of sodium acetate, NaC2H2O2
C) sodium nitrate, NaNO3, to an aqueous solution of nitrous acid, HNO2
also how do i know if things like potassium hypochlorite are acids or bases? it kind of looks like it might be the conjugate base to the HClO but then im not sure... if it doesnt have acid in the name or some sort of charge how do I know if its an acid or a base?
Explanation / Answer
a) increase in pH
b) decrease in pH
c) increase in pH
potassium hypochlorite is acid in water whose conjugate base is HClO-. it might acts as a base in the more acidic solution of strong acid lile HClO4, HClO3 etc..
