Question
Research shows clearly that what determines our food habits, chances of being overweight and obese and overall framework of health is our mum's diet whilst we are in the womb. We all know it is a very common practice by many that once they get pregnant, they start eating for two and let go of any restrictions in their diet there is. For instance, if in the past they stayed clear of ice cream, now they frequently indulge in ice cream. This practice in fact makes the infant used to consuming these empty calories and higher sweet content in the diet. Often women with a healthy BMI think they can indulge more and take care of the weight gain later on. What they do not know is the fact that bouncing in weight is actually a precursor for becoming overweight. Moreover, the infant develops the taste for certain food items during the first nine months of life. Salty foods are amongst those. People who have tendency for higher sodium content in their food have developed this tendency during their infancy. Based on the extensive research that was done in the developing countries it was seen in Africa, it was seen that if the mum curtails her physical activity during pregnancy and not increase her caloric intake, she can in fact deliver a healthy baby. That is just to show you how much excess calorie is consumed in general. Now, based on this information, if you have a client who is a first time mum with a BMI in a healthy range who has started to overeat in her first trimester, what dietary practices d you implement to guide her in the correct direction? REMEMBER: you have a patient in a very sensitive time s you have to keep that in mind, also you need to give her attractive meal ideas that are not loads of work since she already has loads on her plate. If you are going to educate her, tell me how, do not just say: education is key!:)Explanation / Answer
In the above aspects, pregnant women are consuming high sweet content, salty foods so that infants have developed a feature of tasting more salty content. However, consuming more food, with fat content will make the inherited obese gene s active to inherit to infant as explained below.
Therefore, it is essential to prefer "low energy ketogenic diet (LCKD)", & "low calorie diet" with high fiber content that makes pregnant women to move easily from first trimester onwards. Therefore, a healthy baby will be delivered
However, pregnant women should stop eating micorwaved food in plastic containers due to formation of endocrine disruptors (ex. Plastic pollutants) are the potential pollutants, which may profound long-term effect in the mother & baby life by affecting endocrine system. For example, microwaving foods in plastic containers would release endocrine disruptors such as phenols, phthalates, plastic polymers etc. These are potential molecules that can cause cancer by affecting endocrine glands. Therefore, these pollutants & toxins (ex. Bisphenol-A, pthalates) promptly affect hormones of the endocrine secretions finally exert their toxic effects.
The pregnant women should prefer low-fat diet with more carbohydrate diet as she is a first time mother with a high body metabolic index rate (BMI) & should not overeat therefore, it is possible to prevent "obesity & overweight" of infants. The mothers who have higher body metabolic index have resulted in offspring with 4-fold risk of developing obesity. The shared genetic factors & molecular mechanisms responsible for this childhood metabolic risk has not illustrated with complete scientific and epidemiological studies. Therefore, LCKD, LCD is preferable diet to them
