Review the following case study :
New York City gets 90% of its drinking water from the Catskills watershed about 60 miles away. Previously, the water quality was so high that no treatment or filtering was necessary. In recent decades, urbanization and expansion closer to the Catskills has begun to decrease water quality. Battles have ensued between the rural folk and farmers who don't want regulations put on their land use and the city that needs regulations controlling NPS pollutant sources so that water quality is maintained.
Review the New York Times article A Catskills Compromise for additional information. In your discussion post, discuss the following: Is this enough to save New York's water? If not, what else do you feel should be done?

This will be enough to save the new York's water. If Mr Dean Gitter agrees to this proposal i.e. the state would buy 1,200 acres on the eastern side of the mountain and incorporate them in the Catskills Forest Preserve. Mr. Gitter would keep 800 acres on the western slope that would provide room for a smaller, yet still substantial, resort complex.
This is neccessary for the water quality as the eastern side is the most sensitive and can't be handed to Mr. Gitter. Their maybe only one hiccup to this plan that Mr. Gitter doesn't approve of this, in that case we can allocate a larger say 1200 acres area to him and incorporate the rest of the 800 acre area to the reserve. In this case the quality of the water would be affected but not much and we can now set up a small water treatment plant which would cost much less than stated in the article, hence solving the problem.
