Question
1.Observation: You went out to a local coastal marsh and took a sediment core. You look at it and find a layer of grass material about 6 cm thick from the surface.Below that layer, you find a 3cm thick layer of coral reef sand and very old algal material. How would you interpret the different layers and why is there a thick layer of marine sediment in a coastal salt marsh?
2.You are volunteering on an archeological dig in mountains that are 3000 meters above sea level.Your team finds a fossilized organism at the top of the mountain.Upon inspection, the organism is a marine organism akin to a sea urchin that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in the Triassic Period.Describe the process of how a living marine mammal in the Triassic came to be found at the top of a mountain on land.Use material and terms from your reading to answer this question.
3.The 1964 earthquake, called the Great Alaska Earthquake, was immensely useful for researchers to learn about megathrust earthquakes.Describe how the analysis of the effects of this earthquake illuminated scientific knowledge.
Explanation / Answer
answer 1- I have took a sediment core from the salt marsh. In the sediment core i have found the 6 cm layer of grass and soil regolith. this layer consist of humus and organic matter. below this grassy layer there is presence of 3cm coral reef sediment. these are formed by the activity of algae by the disintegration of coral reefs. the marine sediment comes to this site by the turbidity currents and longshore current. the sediment from the floor the continental shelf comes to salt marsh by the turbidity currents. above these marine deposit coral reef sediment deposited. In the marsh there is absence of trees only small grasses present there.
answer 2- the presence of marine mammel "sea urchin" on the mountain which 3000 meter above sea level represent the marine transgression that were takes place during period of Jurassic. the age of sea urchin was triassic. when the transgression takes place takes sea water move towards land and sea level rised. it cause the depostion of sea mammals and other organism gastropods, cephalopods on the land region.the presence of such mammel like sea urchin on 3000 above sea level that there were transgression process takes place during Jurassic and sea water moves toward land which cause movement and then depostion of such organism ln land.
answer- 3 the great alaska earthquake was massive earthquake in the history of the earth. this massive occured on 27 march 1967 in Price william sound region of the alaska. the magnitude of the earthquake was 9.2. the epicentre of this earthquake was 10km. This earthquake was occurened when pacific plate moves northward direction with the velocity of 5-7cm/year and collide with alaskan plate. because of this collision southern region of alaska region wrapped. and other region uplifted due to this collision. because of this earthquake Latouche island moves over 18 meter to southeast direction. montague island region also uplifted 9m. there are also some region which subsides the Portage region subsides by 3m. the hinge line that joins the suduction and uplifted zone extended from the prince wiliam sound region to the southeast direction of Kodiak Island.
