Question
Hydrothermal vents, such as the one shown here, occur on the ocean floor along mid-ocean ridges. The GEOgraphics in this chapter on page 416 (13th Ed.) page 425 14th Ed.) examined these features, where very hot, mineral-rich water is emitted into the cold water of the deep-ocean environment.
a.What category of sediment is created by the process described above – hydrogenous, biogenous, or terrigenous? Why? Explain.
b.How are hydrothermal vents related to the biosphere? How can there be life in these deep, cold, and dark environments? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
hydrogenous sediments like sulfides, barium and calcium are usually formed along the regions of hydrothermal vents. because through the hydrothermal vents, minerals rich fluids came out to the ocean surface, and will react with the cold waters and precipitates there
b) certain chemosynthetic bacteria use the heat and sulphur coming from the hydrothermal vents to make their food. this process is known as chemosynthesis.
chemosynthetic bacteria wont require sun light
