Question

calculate water footprint and to analyze global and national water savings.

**Question**

Water footprint calculations.

Four countries (A, B, C and D) planning to trade rice. All four countries produce rice and virtual water content per ton of the produced rice is estimated to be:

Country A = 1275 m3 /ton

Country B = 2182 m3 /ton

Country C = 5455 m3 /ton

Country D = 3103 m3 /ton

After negotiations among the countries they decided that Country A should sell the rice to Country B and Country C to sell the rice to Country D. They also agreed that the product trade between Countries A and B is 488.100 ton/yr and between Countries C and D 416.300 ton/yr.

After several years of trading in 2016, September 26th UN Water Committee hire you to analyze national and global water savings between these countries and recommend future trade among these countries. Your report should include the following:

3.1) Calculations of annual national water footprint for the rice (for all countries). You should label these values as a national water loss or national water saving.

3.2) Calculate global water saving (loss) for this product.

3.3) Analyze these results and inform the Water Committee if these two trades are water sustainable. What are your recommendations for the future trades?

Explanation / Answer

3.1 Virtual water content/ton of rice of country A=1275m3/ton

Since country A sells rice sells to country B=488.100ton/year

Annual loss of water= 1275m3/ton*488.100ton/year

=622,327.5 m3/year

Virtual water content for country B=2182m3/ton

Annual saving of water=2182m3/ton*488.100ton/year

=1,065,034.2m3

For country C

Virtual water content=5455m3/ton

Since 416.300ton/year rice is exported to the country D

Annual loss of water=5455m3/ton*416.300ton/year

=2,270,916.5m3

for country D

virtual water content per ton of rice=3103m3/ton

annual saving of water=416.300*3103*3103m3/ton

=1,291,778.9

=1291779m3

3.2 Global water saving=annual saving of country B+annual saving of country D

=1,065,034.2+1,291,779

=2,356,813.2m3/year

3.3. The annual loss of water for the country A after selling rice to country B is 622,327.5 m3/year whereas the annual loss of water for the country C by selling rice to country D is 2,270,916.5 m3/year which is huge. So the trade for country A to B is sustainable whereas for country C to D is not sustainable. It is recommended that country C should not sell rice to country D if possible or it should decrease its amount of import of rice to country D so to compensate for the loss of water.
