Question
View (and include a printout of) a weather map of the United States displaying station model data. (You may have to display in "landscape" orientation). From the American Meteorological Society DataStreme Project website, http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/dstreme/ --> scroll down to "Surface" --> click “U.S. Data”. Describe the weather conditions (air temperature, dew point, sky cover, winds, and any present weather such as rain, snow, etc.) for six stations of your choice (at least 2 of the 6 stations should include some type of weather condition such as rain, snow, haze, etc.). Clearly circle your chosen 6 stations on the map. (Be sure to always include proper units of measure where appropriate). Describe the location of the station by its city/state, or by its geographic location. For example: Looking at Figure 5.4, weather conditions at Little Rock, Arkansas (or the weather conditions for the circled station in Arkansas) are: • air temperature --> 62ºF • dew point --> 61ºF • sky condition --> overcast • winds --> 5 knots from the SE • sea level pressure --> 1022.3 mb • heavy rain Note: Sea level pressure is the most potentially confusing station model element. To decode the sea level pressure numbers on a weather map, you must do the following: 1. Place a decimal point to the left of the right-most number. 2. Prefix either a “9” or a “10” to the number. 3. Your result is the sea level pressure in millibars. So, 223 1022.3 mb 946 994.6 mb (the resultant sea level pressure should be close to the standard value of 1013 mb).
