Question
Describe how advancing a scientific idea -- including gaining priority for an individual discovery -- was influenced by the context of the time (that is, by institutional, cultural, social, religious and financial realities)
Using the fictionalized account in Cantor's Dilemma as a starting point, discuss at least one example that we have encountered in this course of how science affected society, and (also) an example of how society influenced science.
This is for a final essay, but I really need help on consistant ideologies to mdiscuss in the first part, so anyone have input on topic/paragraph ideas because I'm not sure how to tame this paper. The second part is just incase anyone who has read Cantor's Dilemma could give insight on how best to relate it to this paper. I really need some guidance. Thanks in advance!
Explanation / Answer
Scientific discoveries made by individuals have always been influenced by the era’s institution, cultural, social and religious beliefs. Initially it was believed that the Earth was the center of the universe and all other planets revolved around the Earth. This belief was started by the church and all who opposed it were threatened or opposed. Galileo proved that Earth was merely one of the many planets revolving around the Sun and this is the fact we still believe in. At first he was opposed, but eventually people saw and understood the truth behind his discovery and started to believe. Earlier there were very few women scientists like Marie Curie who set up a new landmark in the map of scientific discoveries. Back then, women were expected to be proficient in household chores and not to get involved in works which needed them to travel or go outside home. But now, female scientists have broken the gender barriers and are coming ahead and publishing amazing scientific discoveries. Financial reality has influenced research in multiple ways. Earlier, funds available to research at an institution would be very limited thus leading to minor progress. But now, people are recognizing the importance of research and more research and development divisions are coming up in companies which favor innovations and new improved techniques. Thus, scientific discoveries continue to get influenced by the particular time period’s institutional, cultural, social and religious beliefs.
