Question

The lab was a "Two-Base Extraction" A mixture of benzoic acid, 2-naphthol, and naphthalene was extracted with sodium bicarbonate and followed by sodium hydroxide.

The question is:

A classmate performed the extractions in the wrong sequence: aqueous sodium hydroxide first followed by aqueous sodium bicarbonate.

Given this mistake which components would be isolated from each extract fraction: the first using NaOH; the 2nd using NaHCO3; and the 3rd fraction remaining in the separatory funnel and thought to be the "neutral" compound.

Explanation / Answer

Now can you do this?

"Explain your answer, again citing specific relevant facts about each extracting base and/or the components you believe were extracted in each case."
