For each of the factors below, choose how the rate of photosynthesis will be affected:
a.increase the rate of photosynthesis
b.decrease the rate of photosynthesis
1)decreased CO2
2)increased CO2
3)decreased temp
4)increased temp
5)decreased light
6)increased light
7)increased red and blue light
8)giving the plant only green light
Define carbon fixation. What enzyme is required in order to allow for carbon fixation of carbon dioxide molecules?
Which molecule represents the source of energy driving Calvin cycle reactions?
How many carbon dioxide molecules are required to produce one glucose molecule?
Which types of plants undergo C3, C4, and CAM mechanisms? Briefly describe the major difference between these mechanisms.
Explanation / Answer
1) Decreased CO2 - b. Decrease the rate of Photosynthesis because the CO2 is the main component in the process of photosynthesis.
2) Increased CO2 - a. Increase the rate of Photosynthesis because CO2 helps in making of sugar in photosynthesis so the increase in CO2 helps plant in performing more activity.
3) Decreased Temperature - b. Decrease the rate of Photosynthesis there is optimal temperature required for the activity for the enzymes to generate at low temperatures the movement of the enzymes around the substrate is slow.
4) Increased Temperature - a. Increase the rate of Photosynthesis - When there is increase in the temperature the collission of the enzymes increases and they meet the substrate fast which makes more activity to form more sugars.
5) Decreased Light - b. Decrease the rate of photosynthesis - Light is the major factor for photosynthesis because it helps in absorption of all other factors like water.
6) Increased Light- a. Increase the rate of Photosynthesis - As Light is one of the major factors the rate of absorption of other factros increses with more light and the release of the oxygen increases.
7) Increased red and blue light : Increased red light- b. Decrease the rate of photosynthesis because there less intensity of the light exposure to the plant.
Increased blue light- a. Increase the rate of photosynthesis - Plants exposed to blue light grow in all acpets like in stomatal opening closing, chloroplast formation and other process so there is high rate of photosynthesis.
8) Giving plant only green light - b. Decrease the rate of photosynthesis - Plants under only green light donot have higher rates of photosynthesis because there is lesss rate of absorption.
Carbon fixation : Conversion of carbon dioxide into the carbon molecules like into carbohydrates. carboxylase is the enzyme required to allow carbon fixation of CO2 molecules.
Carbon Dioxide molecule represents the source of energy driving the calvin cycle reaction.
Six molecules of carbon dioxide are required to produce one glucose molecule.
The normal photosynthetic plants under go C3 cycle or calvin cycle , Only topical plants undego C4 cycle or Hatch and slack cycle, CAM or Crasulacean Acid Metabolism mechanism takes place only in desert plants like cactus.
The major difference between C3, C4 and CAM mechanism is the enzyme or the CO2 acceptor, In C3 cycle the CO2 acceptor is Carboxylase enyme, In C4 cycle CO2 acceptor is Ribulose bi Phosphate, In CAM mechanism day time Caboxylase enzyme is used and Ribulose bi Phosphate is used during nights.
