Question
5. A student following a similar procedure r student, in order to separate calcium chl ecovered a total of 0.78a sodium chloride and 1.09 g silicon dioxide. The carbonate from silicon dioxide, converted the calcium carbonate to calcium oride by reaction with hydrochloric acid. The student converted the calcium chloride back to calcium carbonate by reaction with potassium carbonate. After vacuum filtration and drying over a steam bath, the student recorded the mass of the recovered calcium carbonate as 1.07g. Determine the mass percent of each component in the mixture as well as the the student's percent recovery and percent error if the original sample mass was 3.14g.Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Mass of sodium chloride =0.78 g
Mass of silicon dioxide = 1.09 g
Mass of calcium carbonate = 1.07 g
Mass of original sample = 3.14 g
Lets calculate the percent recovery of each compound.
% of sodium chloride = [ mass of sodium chloride / original sample mass]*100%
= [0.78g / 3.14g]*100%
= 24.84 % sodium chloride
% of silicon dioxide = [mass of silicon dioxide/ mass of original sample]*100%
= [1.09 g / 3.14 g] *100%
= 34.71 % silicon dioxide
% of calcium carbonate = [ mass of calcium carbonate / mass of original sample]*100%
=[ 1.07 g / 3.14 g] *100 %
= 34.08 % calcium carbonate
Students percent recovery = sum of each component percent
= [24.84 % + 34.71 % + 34.08 %]
= 93.63%
Percent error = [Actual value – theoretical value/ theoretical value] *100 %
=[((0.78 g +1.09 g +1.07g)- 3.14 g) / 3.14 g]*100%
= 6.37 %
