Explanation / Answer

1)

a)

Molar mass of H2O,

MM = 2*MM(H) + 1*MM(O)

= 2*1.008 + 1*16.0

= 18.016 g/mol

mass of H2O = 3.19 g

mol of H2O = (mass)/(molar mass)

= 3.19/18.02

= 0.1771 mol

Balanced chemical equation is:

3H2O + P2O5 —> 2H3PO4

According to balanced equation

mol of H3PO4 formed = (2/3)* moles of H2O

= (2/3)*0.1771

= 0.118 mol

Molar mass of H3PO4,

MM = 3*MM(H) + 1*MM(P) + 4*MM(O)

= 3*1.008 + 1*30.97 + 4*16.0

= 97.994 g/mol

mass of H3PO4 = number of mol * molar mass

= 0.118*97.99

= 11.57 g

Answer: 11.6 g

b)

% yield = actual mass*100/theoretical mass

= 9.17*100/11.57

= 79.3 %

Answer: 79.3 %
