IR Spectroscopy 2018 Question2 - Quostion6 Obiective O aldehyde O carboxylic acid alcohol ketone nitrile (i.e, RCN) None of these other choices is correct. esterExplanation / Answer
IR spectroscopy mainly deals with the stretching and bending vibrations that occur in a molecule. The molecules when placed in a IR spectrometer absorbs a particular frequencies while others are transmitted. Also a compound absorbs the frequency in a particular region and shows stretching and bending vibrations.
In the above spectra we see three main peaks:
1. At approximately 3000 cm-1 which represents the stretching frequency of O-H group In alcohol.
2. At approx. 1500 cm-1 which represents the stretching of C-O or O-H in alcohol.
3. At approx. 600 cm-1 which may represent the bending vibrations of the C-H.
Therefore from all the above points we can conclude that the functional group may be alcohol.
