Question
The following table covers the hormones that are involved with the reproductive organs in both sexes. Fill in the blank boxes. Hormone Source Function Hypothalamus Male & Female: Activates anterior pituitary to release FSH and LH Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) Male: stimulates Sertoli cells to nourish developing sperm & produce inhibin Female: stimulates follicle growth & secretion of estrogen Anterior pituitary Male: stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone Female: stimulates ovulation and development of corpus luteum Estrogen Female: development of 1degree and 2degree sex characteristics, development and maintenance of endometrium, mass increase of myometrium, stimulates mammary gland development Female: Female: Relaxin Male: Male: Ovaries/Corpus luteum/Placenta Maintains pregnancy Inhibin Explain the difference between slow block and fast block to polyspermy.Explanation / Answer
2. The fusion of plasma membranes of egg and sperm during the process of fertilization triggers a series of changes in the egg, which blocks polyspermy. Fusion of plasma membranes of sperm and egg cells triggers depolarization of the membrane. Now, this membrane causes “fast block to polyspermy,” which temporarily blocks the sperm penetration. This occurs prior to the cortical reaction.
Depolarization of oocyte riggers the exocytosis and thus releases the enzymes that cause hardening of zona pellucida. The sperm binding receptors are clipped off by the secreted materials and form the fertilization envelop, which act as a “slow block polyspermy.”
