2. The following data were obtained for the reaction: 3A +WE+F2 Time (s) ALM 0.1000 0.0787 0.0649 0.0481 0.0380 10.0 20.0 40.0 60.0 Plot three graphs (on separate sheets of graph paper) of the data to determine the reaction order. It could be either o, 1t or 2d order. From analysis of youlr graphs, determine the order of the reaction? Explain so it is clear you understand how to a. answer the question. Calculate the rate conStant (correct units, please) from the graph and NOT from a formula. (Please show work.) 27,9 ?? x 22,8 ?? CAROUINA PACExplanation / Answer
the relation between rate of reaction involving species (A) is -dA/dt= K[A]n (1)
n is order of reaction,
n=0 refers to zero order, n=1 is first order and n=2 refers to second order.
let at t=0, [A]=[A]0 and at, t=t, [A]=[A] are boundary conditions
when n=0 the reaction is zero order and -dA/dt= K and integrated equation with the boundary conditions become [A]= [A]0-Kt (1)
so a plot of [A] vs t need to be straight line whose slope is -K if zero order reaction has to be obeyed.
when n=1, the reaction is 1st order -dA/dt= K[A] and integrated equation is lnA =ln[A]0-Kt and hence the plot of lnA vs t has to be straight line for 1st order reaction to be obeyed with a slope of -K.
when n=2, the reaction is 2nd order -dA/dt= K[A]2 and integrated equation is 1/A= 1/[A]0+ Kt and hence the plot of 1/A vs t has to be straight line for 2nd order with a slope of K.
the plot of [A] vs t, ln A vs t and 1/A vs t which ever gives high R2 value will be the best fit.
All the three plots with the data points are shown below.
From the plots , high R2 value of 1 is obtained for the plot of 1/[A] vs t and hence the reaction is second order. The rate constant for the reaction is slope =0.271/M.sec
