Question

It is desired to install new rapid sand filters in your company's wastewater treatment plant after the sedimentation tanks. The design loading rate to the filters is 320 m3/d-m2 6.1 Calculate the filter surface area and number of filters that should be provided for the design flow rate of 0.8 m3/s, if the preferred maximum surface area of the tank 50 m2?(6) 6.2 If it is required that the filter capacity be sufficient to handle the design flow rate with one filter out of service, will the arrangement in 6.1 be adequate for the purpose? If not suggest recommendations Note: The recommended maximum loading rate

Explanation / Answer

Ans 6.1

Filter surface area = design flow rate / design loading rate

= (0.8 m3/s) / [(200/86400)m3/m2-s]

= 345.6 m2

Number of filters = Filter surface area / max surface area

= 345.6 m2 / 50 m2

= 6.9 = 7

Ans 6.2

For same capacity with number of filters = 6

max surface area = Filter surface area/Number of filters

= 345.6 m2 / 6 = 57.6 m2

The arrangement in 6.1 is not adequate

Recommendations

max surface area  > 57.6 m2
