Question
It is concerned with the He+ atom and its wave functions.
The ground state wave function is:
?1s = 2(z/a0)^ (3/2) * e^ (-r/a0)
and the first excited state wave function is instead:
?2s= (1/(2* ?2)) (Z/a0) ^3/2 * ((2-r)/a0)* e^ (-r/2a0)
In case you do not remember,
r(n,l) = a0n^2/Z * (1+ (1/2)(1- l(l+1)/n))
1. Calculate the energy associated with each of the three wavefunctions of lowest energy, in order of increasing energy
2. Provide an expression for the average distance from the nuclues for the 2s and 2p orbitals
3. I am irradiating the system on resonance with radiation of energy 20.4eV; would I observe absorption of radiation or not? Explain
4. If the answer to question 3 is yes, what orbitals are involved?
Thanks
