Question
The rection A -----> B takes place according to the flowchart. Desired product is B
a) Why would you install the expensive seperator and recycle pump instead of selling the effluent from the reactor directly to customers of the desired product B?
b) If all trace impurities contained in the fresh feed to the reactor end up in the bottom effluent from the separator that is recycled, what would eventually happen and how you avoid this situation?
c) If you designed the reactor to produce 10 kg A and 100 kg B from 110 kg A in a single pass, thereby eliminating the need for the separator and the recycle, what might be the issues?

Separator is installed to establish recycle stream to the reactor to enhance the rate of reaction in forward direction in controlled manner. It is required incase of exothermic reactions to control the temperature inside reactor. And also to recover the un reacted reactants, to make process cost effective. Industrial feeds are relatively high cost. Impurities keep on recycled to reactor, may slow down/inhibit the rate of reaction. And also it will hinder the performance of separator, may ruined the product quality. To avoid this situation impurities to be separated from feed stage itself or else in separator impurities to be separated from separator and to be purged out from separator. Impurity accumulation also disturb the steady state operation. If it is highly exothermic reaction, controlling of reaction rate and temperatures inside reactor is difficult. It may lead to side/undesired reactions. And also if separator is not there then speration of reactant A and product B is not effective, may lead to poor product quality
