Question
In step 3 of glycolysis, fructose 6-phosphate is phosphorylated, giving fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. This step costs one unit of ATP. A student proposes that, in order to avoid wasting ATP, we skip step 3 and take fructose 6-phosphate directly on to step 4 where it will be split apart by aldolase. Show the reaction of fructose 6-phosphate that would be catalyzed by aldolase. Will this plan work out as well as the student expects? Has she really found a way to save one ATP? Are there any pitfalls to this plan?
Explanation / Answer
Aldolase cannot split fructose-6-fructose, we cannot directly put it for aldolase to break down.
