Question
Suppose that we have a database table describing an in-hospital patient who is admitted for an illness.
If we are given the following table schema:
Patients(patientid, name, sex, birthdate, illness-diagnosis, treatment-unit, doctor)
Using commonsense knowledge, list all (minimal 3) the direct simple functional dependencies (here, direct simple means no transitive cause; and it is possible to have a FD with more than one attribute on its left-side). We assume that a doctor works for only one treatment-unit but a treatment-unit can have more than one doctor. We also assume that the patient id is assigned only after the diagnosis and the decision is made that the patient will stay in the hospital. The patient id will stay the same throughout the hospital stay. The patient id is used only for the period of a particular hospital stay. The type of illness determines the treatment-unit.
Explanation / Answer
treatment unit --> doctor
treatment unit, doctor --> doctor
treatment unit --> illness
patient id--> name, sex, birthdate.
