Question

1. How would you tell whether another rock sample is igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic in origin? What characteristics in the rock would help you know which type it is?

2. One sedimentary rock is composed of rounded grains, and the grains in another are angular. What can you tell about the history of the two rocks from these observations? (6 pts) Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed.

3. Explain how the geosphere, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the biosphere all contribute to the rock cycle.

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER :

Whether another rock sample is igneous , sedimentary or metamorphic in origin can be tell by seeing its texture and mineral composition .

For igneous rock , the grain size will be very fine some time can not see by our necked eye.

But for sedimentary rock grain size must be courser than igneous and metamorphic rock . and those grains can be see by our eyes. And grain shape may vary from rounded to angular . For metamorphic rock grain size finer than sedimentary rock but courser than igneous rock .

What characteristics in the rock would help you know which type it is?

ANSWER :

The texture (grin size , shape and orientation ) and mineral composition are the two main characteristics in the rock which helps to find out the rock type .

ANSWER :

The sedimentary rock which composed with rounded grain must be form in low energy environment (example - deep sea ) .

On the other hand the sedimentary rock which form with angular grain must be form in comparatively high energy environment . ( example – at the end of river or before it )

Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed.

Formation of sedimentary rock :

The sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of sediment or small particle which was carried by the transporting agent (like water , air , or glacier )

ANSWER

Geosphere :

Volcano erupting : it helps to come out lava on the earth surface and hence form igneous rock .

Gravity : it helps to pulling rock fragment to the downward direction .

Hydrosphere :

Water , snow , ice helps to weather the rock and transporting those sediment from one point to another . and also it chemically react with rock materials and convert to the another type materials .

And also precipitation of the sediments occurs within the water which helps to form sedimentary rock .

Biosphere :

Ash particles from the volcano comes into the air . wind or moving air carries sediment . wind carrying the volcanic ash also
