Question 4: quantum and nuclear chemistry
A. Two imaging techniques that doctors use are MRI imaging and CT imaging. Use the table of electromagnetic wavelengths to answer the following questions.
i. A doctor orders an MRI scan at 8.5 x 10^7 Hz and a CT scan at 1.69 x 10^19 Hz. What kind of electromagnetic wave does the MRI use, and what kind does the CT use? Show your work.
ii. Ionizing radiation can be especially damaging to tissue. Ionization occurs at energies greater than 5 x 10^-19 J. Did either of the scans ordered by the doctor involve ionizing radiation? Show your work.
B. A student was give an unknown sample containing one or more elements. The line spectrum of each possible elements and the spectrum of his unknown sample are given below. Which elements did his unknown sample contain?
C. A radioisotope lab created a new radioactive isotope. In order to determine the half-life of the new isotope, workers measured its mass over time and plotted their data on the curve below. Use the decay curve to answer the following questions.
i. What was the half-life if the new isotope?
ii. By what time had 75% of the sample decayed to something else?

Explanation / Answer

A. i. Wavelength = c/f

For MRI, wavelength = 3*10^8/8.5*10^7= 3.53 m

For CT, wavelength= 3*10^8/1.69*10^19= 0.01775nm

ii. From the table, MRI uses radio waves and CT uses X Rays.

iii. The doctor should order an MRI scan because energy of radio waves is lesser than energy of X Rays. This is because the frequency used in MRI is lesser
