Explanation / Answer

1.

A coenzyme is a small molecule which in combination with an enzyme promotes the enzyme activity. The coenzyme is a cofactor, which is loosely bound to the enzyme when compared to regular cofactor. In presence of coenzyme, the enzyme activity takes place instantaneously. Examples: NAD+, FAD, biotin, and lipoamide.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) are the coenzymes that are present in living systems. Its oxidized form is NAD+ (oxidising agent, can accept electrons) and reduced form is NADH. NAD is involved in redox reactions and carries electrons from one reaction to another.

FAD is a derivative of the vitamin riboflavin whose reactive part is isoalloxazine ring. FAD and NAD+ both can accept two electrons, while in doing so, unlike NAD+, FAD takes up two protons.

The NAD is reduced by accepting single hydrogen (H) from hydrogen atom (H2), while FAD is reduced by accepting full hydrogen atom. Thus, an electron pair from the hydrogen atom (H2) and the other hydrogen is freed into the medium by the NAD. Hence their reduced forms are written as (NADH + H+) and FADH2.
