Question

Experiment 11 Writing Lewis Structure (A paper lab!) Paper Lab Format There is no physical experiment for this lab and therefore no formal pre-lab with a title, objective, hypothesis, etc. is required. To be clear you do not need a formal pre-lab. Instead the pre-lab is a set of questions given below. For this paper experiment, the pre-lab questions below must be completed before coming to lab. The post-lab, consisting of a series of Lewis structure problems, will be completed in small groups during class. Finally, a problem set of stoichiometry problems will completed by each individual (like an open book test) during the last hour of lab. You can use your notes for the problem set, but it must be completed individually. Successfully completing the pre and post labs will earn a grade of C. Grades of A and B will be earned by each students performance on the problem set the last hour of lab. There is an automatic one letter grade reduction for failure to make a good effort to complete the pre lab or the post lab. Key concepts To understand Lewis structure's for molecules/ions, formal charge, valence electrons, resonance, electron geometry, hybridization, polarity, resonance, sigma and pi bonds and intermolecular forces. Pre-lab Pre-lab questions must be done at home before lab. Textbooks, and lecture notes may be used to help solving these stoichiometry problems. As always your teaching assistants are available to guide you through these problems during office hours. Students may also refer to blackboard for a detail answer key to the pre-lab questions if needed. 1. Rank the following in order of increasing electronegativity? F, CI, Br, I, O 2. How many valence electrons do each of the following atoms have? CI 163
