Question
1a. A sample of argon gas at a pressure of 0.824 atm and a temperature of 26.2 °C, occupies a volume of 10.4 liters. If the gas is allowed to expand at constant temperature to a volume of 14.6 liters, the pressure of the gas sample will be___________ atm?
1b. A sample of methane gas at a pressure of 0.832 atm and a temperature of 29.9 °C, occupies a volume of 553 mL. If the gas is compressed at constant temperature until its pressure is 1.05 atm, the volume of the gas sample will be_____________ mL.
Explanation / Answer
For ideal gas
PV = nRT
R is a constant and for a closed chamber n is also constant
PV/T = nR = constant for closed chamber
1a)
0.824 atm x 10.4 L / T = 14.6L x P/T
as Temperature is constant , I kept it as T as it will cancel out from both side
P = 0.587 atm
b)
this one is also at constant temperature and hence we can remove T as it is common both side
PV = constant
0.832 atm x 553 L = 1.05 atm x V
V = 438.187 mL
