Question

Question Part Points Submissions Used A dockworker applies a constant horizontal force of 80.0 N to a block of ice on a smooth horizontal floor. The frictional force is negligible. The block starts from rest and moves 12.0 m in 8.00 s. (a) What is the mass of the block of ice?
______ kg b) If the worker stops pushing at the end of 8.00 s, how far does the block move in the next 8.00 s?
______ m

Explanation / Answer

a) Force applied F = 80 N

Initial velocity u = 0

time t = 8 sec , he travels 12 m.

Here the force is constant then acceleration will be constant so using equation s = ut+0.5at^2

12 = 0.5a(8)^2

a = 0.375 m/s^2

Now force = ma

hence mass m = 80/0.375 = 213.33 kg

b) final velocity at t = 8s, v = u+at = 0+0.375*8 = 3 m/s

since there is no force after t = 8 s then velocity will be constant.

so in next 8 s the distance travelled d = 3*8 = 24 m.
