Question

CHEMICAL BONDING Ballav -Deciding whether a Lewis structure satisfies the octet rule Decide whether these proposed Lewis structures are reasonable proposed Lewis structure Is the proposed Lewis structure reasonable? Yes O No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons olo The correct number is: No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule The symbols of the problem atoms are: Yes Ar O No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons. The correct number is: No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule The symbols of the problem atoms are: Yes O No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons The correct number is: No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule The symbols of the problem atoms are: If two or more atoms of the same element don't satisfy the octet rule, just enter the chemical symbol as many times as necessary. For example, if two oxygen atoms don't satisfy the octet rule, enter "O,O".

Explanation / Answer

1.

H-C-C-H

it has wrong no. of valance electrons as carbon has valancy of 4 .

Here it is shown as 6 valance electrons ,which is wrong

2.

It has right no. of valance electrons as we know that one nitrogen has 5 valance electrons and hence 3 N atoms will have 5 x 3 = 15 valance electrons

there is one negative charge on molecule,it means that it has an extra electron , so total = 15 + 1 = 16 electrons

If you count no. of electrons 3 bond pairs = 6 electrons and 5 lone pairs = 10 electrons ,total = 16 electrons which is correct

but it doesn't satisfy octate rule for extreme right nitrogen , which has only 6 electrons

symbol is N and it is extreme right one

3.

Similary as two , no. of valance electrons are correct

4 carbon , 5 nitrogen and 1 hydrogen = 10 valance electrons

no. of bonds = 3 = 6 e

no of lone pair = 2 = 4 e

total = 10 e ,which right no. of valance electrons

but it does not satisfy octate for nitrogen atoms as it has only 6 electrons

symbol is N
