CHEM 308 Spring 2018 Name: CHEM 308 REPORT FORM: Recrystallization/Melting Points Submit via Blackboard by 5 pm the day before your scheduled lab (must be single PDF file) During your recrystallization of benzoic acid, if you had added twice the volume of water to your flask, how would that have affected your percent recovery? Explain your answer. How pure was your crude biphenyl? Explain your conclusion, using specific melting point values the values are pretty close") 23 (yours and the it value) to support your conclusions (your answer should be more involved than e gExplanation / Answer
1. During the recrystallization process for benzoic acid, If the volume of water added was twice that was needed, then the solution would remain unsaturated, therefore, benzoic acid would not crystallize out of the solution when cooled. The percent recovery would be very low.
2. The pure biphenyl has a melting point value of 69.2 oC. So the crude prepared must have a melting point lower than this as it would have some impurities in it. Therefore, the material is recrystallized to purify the compound. the final product have the same melting point as the literature reported value.
