Question

A solid, conducting sphere of radius a carries an excess charge of +6 pC. This sphere is located at the center of a hollow, conducting sphere with an inner radius of b and an outer radius of c as shown. The hollow sphere also carries a total excess charge of -18 muC. Determine the excess charge on the inner surface of the outer sphere (a distance 6 from the center of t he system). zero coulombs +6 muC +12 muC -6 muC -12 muC Determine the excess charge on the outer surface of the outer sphere (a distance c from the center of the system). zero coulombs +6 muC -12 muC -6 muC +12 muC 3 Which one of the following figures shows a qualitatively accurate sketch of the electric field lines in and around this system?

Explanation / Answer

1) for conductor, charges always lies on the surface .

and field inside conductor is always zero.

charge on surface of a = 6 uC

so on inner surface b, charge will be = - 6uC

2) total charge on shell = -18uC

charge on b + charge on c = -18uC

-6uC + charge on c = -18uC

charge on c = -18 +6 = -12 uC

3) inside a, charge is +ve .

hence field between b to c, field will be away from centre.

total charge of this configuration -18 + 6 = -12 uC is -ve.

so field outside will be towards cntre.
