Even though most organic compounds are more soluble in acetone than they are in tetrachloromethane (CCI,), acetone is almost never used as a solvent in running IR spectra of solids. However, CCl, is very acceptable provided that the solid will dissolve in it. Briefly explain why CCl is the preferred solvent. If you examine the IR spectrum of an unknown, how could you tell if it is an alcohol?Explanation / Answer
CCl4 has zero dipole moment and non polar solvent,and no unsaturations, hence it doesn't or Lower occur any Bending or streching to the IR rays. hence solvent effect goes low. and doesnt occur interferences
but Acetone has a carbonyl group, it has the double bond and it is a unsaturation. hence it tend to occur bending and streching more and more. hence as a solvent, Solvent effect will be gone high.hence interferences will go high.
Alcohols -OH group is indicated from the Broad peak Of IR spectrum within the 3500cm-1 - 3250cm-1 range.
