Question

Describe the movement of protons and electrons that allow the following phenomenon to happen if a person rubs a balloon through your hair. A. The hair is attracted to the balloon. B. After removing the balloon, the hair stands on end. C. The balloon sticks to an uncharged wall. D. The balloon causes water to bend. On the diagram, indicate the approximate location you would place each of the charges listed below so that the total force on the charge will be o. Briefly explain your reasoning for each. A. 5 mu C B. -1 mu C C. 20 mu C

Explanation / Answer

6.(a)

Rubbing a balloon on hair transfers negative electrons from the hair to the balloon. As the balloon is removed , it pulls on the hair with an attractive electric force.

(b) Due to electric force , the hair stands after removing balloon.

(c) As rubbing balloon on hair , added negative charges on the balloon , and the wall has positive charges so balloon will stick to the wall due to attractive electric force .

(d) when you bring negatively charged balloon close to the steam of water , the hydrogen end is attracted towards balloon and oxygen end is repelled away from it. This pair of forces twists the water molecule causes bending.
