Question

Iridium-192 is one radioisotope used in brachytherapy, in which a radioactive patient's body to treat cancer. Brachytherapy allows the use of a higher than normal dose to be placed near the tumor while lowering the risk of damage to healthy tissue. Iridium-192 is often used in the head or breast. source is placed inside a Map Answer the following three questions (a, b, and c) based on the radioactive decay curve of iridium-192, shown below. Explanation / Answer

a.) As we can see from the graph that after 130 days 30% of the sample is remaining so,

mass of indium remain after 130 days = (1.25 x 30)/ 100

= 0.375g

b.) As we can also see from the graph that after 70 days sample becomes 50% so half-life = 70 days

we can also calculate it ,

first calculate k from formula = (ln[A]t - [lnA]o)/t

and then t1/2= 0.693/k

c.) it takes two half life two decay 3/4 of the sample so that remaining sample is 1/4.

so days require = 70 x 2

= 140 days
