Question

Many plants can affect the growth of other. This can occur when one plant produces a chemical that affects another plant. Design an experiment to determine if a solution containing ground-up goldendrod plants has an effect on the growth of radish seedlings. In your experimental design be sure to: state a hypothesis to be tested describe how the experimental group will be treated differently from the control group explain why the number of seedlings used for the experiment should be large identify the type of data that will be collected describe experimental results that would support your hypothesis

Explanation / Answer

Hypothesis:- Golden rod plants have an effect on growth of radish seedlings, kept together in a soluton.

Experimental group : In the solution, golden rod plants are kept with radish seedlings.

Control:- In the solution, radish seedlings are kept , but the golden rod plants are removed.

Golden rod plants , secrete saponins which are good for radish plants. If we take large number of seedlings, then only we will be able to carefully determine the effect of saponins on radish. Small number of seedlings may grow due to other nutrients and minerals already present in water and provided to golden rod plants.

In the control, radish seedlings may remain as it is .

In the experiment, growth in radish seedlings has started.

The results of experiment are supporting the hypothesis. The number of seedlings experiencing growth can be counted manually. This will tell the overall effect of the chemical. Percentage effect can also be calculated.
