Question
A scaled, flexible, foil bag of potato chips, containing 0.500L of air. Is carried from Boston (patm-latm) to Denver (patm-0.83 atm) a. What would the volume of the bag be upon arrival of Denver? b. If the structural limitations of the bag only allow for a 10% expansion in the 1. volume of the bag, what is the pressure of the bag? c. If the bag is in the checked luggage, the pressure and temperature in the hold will decrease considerably during flight to T-210 K and P=126 torr. Calculate the volume of the bag during flight?Explanation / Answer
SOLUTION:
(a) P1V1 = P2V2
=> V2 = P1V1 / P2
=> V2 = 1.0 x 0.500 / 0.83
=> V2 = 0.602 L
(b)
P1V1 = P2V2
volume after 10% expansion (V2) = 0.505 L
P2 = P1V1 / V2
=> P2 = 1.0 x 0.500 / 0.505
=> P2 = 0.99 atm
(c)
During the flight pressure decreases to 126 torr.
126 torr = 0.166 atm
Therefore, pressure in the bag (P2) = 0.166 x 0.500 / 0.505 = 0.164 atm
