Question

Pre-Laboratory Assignment 1. Briefly identifly the hazards you must be aware of before you work with: 3. The method of initial rates involves substituting the initia! reactant concentrations into rate calcula- tions. When you do the experiment, you will be given KMnO4 and H2C204 solutions of known concentra- tions. Will you use these known concentrations in your rate calculations? Briefly explain. (a) H2C204 solutions (b) KMnO4 solutions 2. Briefly explain the meaning of the following terms as they pertain to this experiment. (a) reaction rate (b) rate equation (c) rate constant (d) overall reaction order

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

The solution of H2C2O4 in water is medium strong acid, so try to avoid getting it into eyes or skin.

It can cause extreme destruction to tissues of mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract and can cause burns if inhaled or ingested.

It has an oral LD50 of 600mg/kg.

Both the reagents are highly toxic, so make sure you do not take them close to your mouth or so.

KMnO4 turns the skin dark on exposure , though the stain goes away in a week or two.
