Short Essay 2: Choose one of the two following questions to answer a) The term delocalization means "not limited to a particular place or area". Explain how this term describes the behavior of electrons in aromatic como of electrons affect the reactivity Oxidation reactions are defined chemistry. Give the definition of as described in Organic Chemistry. Explain how the two ways of does delocalization of aromatic compounds compared to other compounds? differently in organic chemistry than they are in inorganic b) oxidation as taught in General Chemistry, and the definition describing oxidation are similar

Explanation / Answer

a)

In a benzene ring, the six carbon atoms are often drawn in a ring with alternating single and double bonds between them. Another drawing shows a hexagon with a circle inside. In both cases, the six electrons not involved in the single

bonds are thought to move freely around the ring, not really belonging to any particular pair of carbon atoms. This delocalization of electrons explains the observations that all the carbon-carbon bonds are the same length and that aromatics do not undergo addition reactions as would be expected if the extra electrons were localized. The delocalization of electrons stabilizes the ring system.

b)

The inorganic definition of oxidation is loss of electrons. The organic definition is formation of additional bonds between carbon and oxygen (or a decrease in the number of carbon-hydrogen bonds). These are similar because when carbon forms a bond with electronegative oxygen, it essentially loses some of its attraction for its electrons.
