What does the term "Silo-ed" or "Stovepiped" operations mean with respect to computer systems? What type of problems is caused by silo-ed computer systems in organizations?

Answer)

The terms "Silo-ed" or "Stovepiped" means an organization which largely or entirely restricts the flow of information within the organization so that the business divisions and even the employees cannot communicate freely and effectively with other groups such as even the management. This can occur due to the organization's culture where it does not encourage the employees to share knowledge or work details and thus work as a team. This prevents the organization from responding to market changes. "Silo-ed" or "Stovepiped" operations can also occur as information silo and data silo, where also the technology hinders the collaboration and communication. Thus it may be that in the organization the cultural information silo, where they are reinforced by technology and business processes and does not support collaboration.

In the "Silo-ed" or "Stovepiped" computer systems in organizations, there may be different types of problems because data from one business division cannot flow into another division freely, thus creating problems. For example, if each business division uses a different software and a different format of the data to manage and store the data will be very difficult. Since each division will have unique validation rules, formats, and key identifiers, thus it will be very difficult to exchange information and process that information.
