Question 60
Say some gasoline contains 0.01 mols of benzene, and 0.49 mols of everything else, for a total of 0.50 mols. Say the vapor pressure of pure benzene at the temperature of interest is 0.1 atm. What is the gas phase pressure of benzene above the gasoline in Torr? The solubility of pure liquid benzene in water is 1780 mg/L at 25 C. For the same gasoline as from the above problem, what is the concentration of benzene in water that comes into contact with the gasoline? Have endocrine active chemicals in the environment have been observed to be mainly a) feminizing? or b) masculinizing? or c) both? and, what is the main evidence that has been observed? What is the main feature of endocrine glands that distinguishes them from exocrine glands? List THREE ways that a chemical can act as an "endocrine disrupter". What are two chemicals or chemical types definitely found in water from sewage treatment plants that are endocrine active? What are two chemicals or chemical types that are used in society that may be endocrine active?Explanation / Answer
Ans 60:- Here Mole fraction of benzene XA = 0.01/0.05
= 0.2
Given Vapour pressure P0A = 0.1atm
PA = P0A XA
= 0.1 x 0.2
= 0.02atm
R= 0.0821
T= 250C
= 298K
Therefore Concentration of benzene in water that comes in contact with gasoline
C= XA PA /RT
= 0.2 x0.02 /0.0821x298
= 1.6x10-4 g/l
