Question

Based on your experimentally determined number of Calories per nut for the brand an type of peanuts you burned, determine the number of these peanuts a 68-kg (150-lb.) person would have to eat to obtain enough energy to swim for 30 min at a rate of 2 mph. What assumption, approximation, or generalization do we make about peanut oil, for the purposes of this experiment? Before doing this experiment, did you expect that the calculated amount of heat released during the combustion of your peanut would be larger or smaller than the actual amount of heat released? Briefly explain. Briefly describe the sources of your experimental error.

Explanation / Answer

1.

The assumptions that we make during the study of calorific values of nuts oil is that the oil is pure and no contaminants are present in the oil. Because any contaminants present would decrease the calorific value of the oil.

2. (1)

Before the experiment i had estimated the net calorific value to be les than the theoretical value of the nut oil. As some of the heat is absorbed by the container and given away to surrounding and also the oil isn't fully pure, water of sulfur present in the oil decreases its calorific value.

(2)

the sources of lower calorific values are the contaminants present in th nut oil. water has a much lower calorific value than oil, hence it uses the heat produced to evaporate itself, thus reducing the calorific value.

3.

the amount of energy needed by a 150 lb man for swimming for 30 mins is approximately 223 calories.

calories in one nut is approximately 11.

so number of nuts needed for a an to swim for 30 mins is 223/11

=21 nuts approximately.
