Question

1a) Draw out the stages of Mitosis for an organism with a diploid number of 6 (2n=6), label the stages and label the final outcome (how many daughter cells, are they identical, are they diploid or haploid). You do not need to include the substages of Prophase, but do familiarize yourself with them.

1b) Draw out the stages of Meiosis for an organism with a diploid number of 6 (2n=6), label the stages and label the final outcome (how many daughter cells, are they identical, are they diploid or haploid). Also label the points at which Mendel's principles are illustrated (i.e. at what point do you see segregation and at what point does independent assortment occur.)

2) Using Punnett Squares, draw out the 6 possible monohybrid crosses that exist for an autosomal gene with two alleles (dominant A and recessive a) in a diploid, sexually reproducing organism.

3) In snapdragons, the genes A, B, C, D, and E assort independently of one another. If an Aa Bb Cc dd EE plant is crossed with an Aa bb cc Dd Ee plant, what is the probability of obtaining an offspring that is phenotypically dominant for all five traits?

Explanation / Answer

3. AaBbCcddEE: This combination of parent gives the following 8 possible genotype gametes that are:

ABCdE, AbCdE, ABcdE, AbcdE, aBCdE, abCdE, aBcdE, and abcdE.

Similarly the parent with combination AabbccDdEe also produces 8 possible genotype gametes that are:

AbcDE, AbcdE, AbcDe, Abcde, abcDE, abcdE, abcDe, and abcde.

When the pentahybrid cross is performed with the given combination of parents, then the total number of offsprings produced are 64.

Out of 64 offsprings only 6 are phenotypically dominant for all the five traits. So, the probability is 6 of 64 offsprings.
