Question
How do you figure out which is oxidation and which is reduction in half-reactions? Could youngive me 5 different reaction examples? Is electrochemical reaction different than redox reaction? Then what's different? What other else that I have to know to conquer how to figure out oxidation and reduction in a reaction in various reactions? Is electrochemical reaction different than redox reaction? Then what's different? What other else that I have to know to conquer how to figure out oxidation and reduction in a reaction in various reactions?Explanation / Answer
oxidation half reaction -> will always donate e-
reduction half reaction --> will alwys accept e-
some exmpales of reduction:
N2(g) + 4 H2O + 2 e 2 NH2OH(aq)+ 2 OH 3.04
Cs+ + e Cs(s) 3.026
Ca(OH)2 + 2 e Ca + 2 OH 3.02
Er3+ + e Er2+ 3.0
Ba(OH)2 + 2 e Ba + 2 OH 2.99
Rb+ + e Rb(s) 2.98
examples of oxdation, are simple, just invert the above reactions...
Is electrochemical reaction different than redox reaction? Then what's different?
Not really, they are pretty similar, they involve transfer of electrons. They are different in which there must be an electric source, ie. the redox reaciton or applied Voltage source
