DATA SHEET Can you trap an unknown gas and weigh it? Name: Make a photocopy of this DATA SHEET: turn in before leaving lab: Trial 2 Trial 1 Known Liquid Volume of flask Mass of flask and foil Room pressure Mass of flask, foil. and condensate Molar mass Show Calculations: Trial 2 rial 1 Unknown Liquid 2 so ml Volume of flask 103.700 g Mass of flask and foil Mass of flask, foil, and condensate Molar mass l am using the average value OR I want to be graded on Trial 1 or 2 only (CIRCLE YOUR Answer) Unknown molar mass: (Grade: Show calculations below to receive full credit Pv -net

Explanation / Answer

3. Effect of the following on molecular weight

a. If the flask is not fully immersed, the amount of gas collected would be lower, thus the moles calculated would be lower which would give a higher molar mass thn expected.

b. If the water is not actually boiling, no all of liquid has evaporated. The lower temperature would thus give lower moles of gas which would yield higher molar mass for the unknown than expected.
