Question
The leak from a concrete waste disposal lagoon resulted in heavy soil contamination in the CenTER county, PA. Soil analysis made by GC/MS at Penn State indicated concentration of kepone Cs = 0.5 g kepone/ 1g of soil. Assume that organic fraction is largely responsible for interactions between soil and hydrophobic organic compounds such as many pesticides and insecticides.
a) Find equilibrium concentration of kepone in soil water if soil has 3% of organic matter.
b) Based on KOW value, estimate whether kepone has high or low aqueous solubility.
Explanation / Answer
A. If soil has 3% organic matter ,it means 97% soil contains kepone so concentration of kepone in soil is 0.5 ×97 =48.5 gram kepone in 100 gram of soil.
B.chlordecone is also called kepone. It is toxic pollutant. Bssed on KOW value (octanol/water)partition coefficient)
It is soluble in strongly alkaline aqueous solution. It is readily soluble in acetone ,less soluble in organic solvent like benzene and light petroleum .
